Green Earth Trust is currently involved in high-level discussions with the key government agencies with a view to reviving the pyrethrum sector in Kenya. In this respect, we appreciate that organic compounds in Pyrethrin are active ingredients in the production of safer pesticides. Progress has been made in this regard and we will be rolling out grower and market access programs at the end of these deliberations and agreement. It is instructive to note that in 2013, former president H. E. Mwai Kibaki signed into law a piece of legislation called the Pyrethrum Amendment Bill, 2013 to liberalize the sector, which was a major incentive to pyrethrum farming and marketing – a factor that led to renewed interest in the cultivation of this high-value crop since the new legislation cancelled the monopoly of Pyrethrum Board of Kenya and gave way to other organized entrants. On account of this law, PBK no longer has monopoly. Pursuant to the above, the liberalization of the pyrethrum sector in 2013 and the inefficiencies of PBK now compel stakeholders to seriously consider marketing their produce through a second national entity, to be charged with registering pyrethrum extracts internationally, developing data packages, marketing and offering grower support.
